Modern AI and Ancient Myth

Humanity has always given its tools a kind of soul. We see this when a god’s weapon whisper’s advice or a cursed sword demands blood. These myths have long warned us: powerful tools demand responsibility. I think this lesson feels more relevant than ever as we build AI systems with increasing autonomy. The question isn’t just what these tools can do, but what happens when they start acting in ways we didn’t anticipate, didn’t prepare for, and don’t even understand.

The Ancient Warning: Power with a Price

I’ll dive into this more in other posts (because I find it fascinating!), but in mythology, powerful tools often have wills of their own. They serve their wielders, but only under the right conditions. Consider:

  • Sharur, an enchanted mace of Ninurta, which could fly, gather intelligence, and advise its master in battle – but was only loyal to a worthy wielder (sound familiar to other stories, cough, Marvel).
  • Uchide no Kozuchi, the “Treasure Mallet” of Japanese folklore, which granted wishes, but could just as easily cause problems if used carelessly.
  • Ayudhapurusha, the personified divine weapons of Hindu tradition, which were basically extensions of the gods themselves, sometimes acting with their own agency.

Can you see the pattern? These weren’t just objects, they became magical, sometimes sentient entities with judgment. They could empower, but also correct, challenge, or even betray their wielders. We can learn from this.

AI Tools That Decide

Today’s AI systems mirror this dynamic. They amplify our capabilities, quickly surpassing the ability to just execute, but also make decisions. And sometimes, those decisions create consequences beyond our control.

  • Autonomous Weapons include AI-powered drones and defense systems that can operate with little human intervention. But who takes responsibility when they make the wrong call? (Did you know there is a Campaign to Stop Killer Robots?)
  • Deepfakes popping up like AI-generated video and audio that can make it incredibly hard to tell the difference between reality and fake, eroding trust in evidence and information.
  • Biased Algorithms, Machine learning models trained or fine-tuned on flawed data don’t just reflect biases – they can reinforce and amplify them in ways that amplify decisions in hiring, policing, and finance.

Like the mythical weapons of old, these tools don’t just follow orders, they influence outcomes in ways that will need accountability.

Modern Stories That Reflect the Same Tension

Even outside of ancient mythology, our stories continue to warn us about the risks of powerful, autonomous tools:

  • Stormbringer, the sword wielded by Elric of Melniboné, grants power but consumes the souls of those it slays-sometimes against its Elric’s wishes.
  • The Cloak of Levitation in Doctor Strange acts independently, protecting the Doctor in ways that go so far as to wipe away his tears when he’s sad

Both are reminders that a tool with its own agency might act in ways its user never intended.

The Responsibility of Wielding AI

The lesson across all these stories, ancient and modern, is the same:

Power without wisdom leads to destruction.

The more capable a tool, the more responsibility falls on those of us who want to create and wield it. This is not easy. It means:

  • Ethical Guardrails Matter. AI development needs checks and balances to ensure systems serve human interests, not just corporate or political ones. This is easier said than done.
  • Transparency is Important. If we don’t understand how an AI makes decisions, we can’t trust or challenge those decisions.
  • Public Awareness is Key. AI is more than a tech issue; it’s a societal one.  And the need for this can’t wait. The more people understand it, the better we can shape its impact.

We’re clearly not the first civilization to create tools that behave in unexpected ways. But unlike the heroes of old, we don’t have the luxury of divine intervention to fix our mistakes. That responsibility is ours.

Let’s do our best to get this one right.
